    Question Carbon Fiber Filament Recommendations

    Hey guys,I'm looking into designing and printing jaws (6" x ~3" x ~3") for a couple 6" vises that are gonna be used to clamp on a 5.75" dia x 30" lg piece of 1018 round stock in a horizontal mill. I need a filament that's gonna be strong and clamp the part securely, be deformation resistant, not prone to brittle failure, and won't be compromised by the use of machine coolant mechanically or dimensionally. We're going to be drilling a ~1.7" diameter hole 22" deep as well as some other operations to give you an idea of the forces at work. We bought a Bambulab X1C Combo kit with a 0.8mm hardened steel nozzle.

    Just wondering which of these you'd recommend for this application, both are carbon fiber reinforced. Also, if you have any other recommendations by a different brand we'd consider those as well. Thanks!

    Apologies in advance, my line breaks did not carry into the post so it looks incredibly confusing. New to this forum, did not know that was how it worked. Definitely not ideal but if you can still make sense of the post I would appreciate the feedback. Thanks

    I don't know what your set up is, but wonder if it might warrant making a fixture rather than use two vices.

    I would suggest brass or aluminum.. No matter what you infuse in the plastic it is still plastic... carb fiber is just Nylon with carb in it.. it warps badly.. must be dried just before use. You have the printer so make your model, print it in abs with the .8 nozzle and 98% infill with .5mm layers and give it a try, if it breaks, buy the Nylon infuse, run it in a dehydrator for 24 hours, take it out and print the part and see if that breaks.. then have a machine shop make your model out of alum or brass.. 3d prints is great for a LOT of things, but sometime you just need real metal... not sure about this project but again give it a try and see how it works..
