I am considering getting my first 3d printer
Hi All, I am considering getting my first 3d printer and I am wondering if it is really worth it. Like is a roll of filament really gonna cost less than getting a new "thing"? I understand that it allows you to make custom objects but for general use (such as replacement parts and enclosures) is it worth the money? Also how much does it cost in the long run and how much is 1KG filament enough for? Many Thanks, A newcomer

It has to be considered a hobby.. it cost money you may or may not get back. At this point for me,(6 years in) I have made back the cost of the hardware, have added a second printer and the things I sell keep the hobby going.. If you don't have a need to make the things you can not buy, not sure it is worth it. You need to learn a CAD/Modeling software to be able to design what you want, other wise it gets old fast just printing bobbles for fun that you find on the internet.. I had NO use for a printer per say, but I did want to make the doohickeys for my other projects and hobbies that I can not just go buy..

In a round about way I made back the money spend on four of my 5 3D Printer / CNC projects.
My 3D Printers have saved me purchasing many things that would have purchase without a 3D Printer. So in this round about way they paid for them selves.
In lieu of purchasing a new set of yard lights $219 only 3D Printed the plastic diffuser globes $2. Was told they would not work an five years later still using the Globes.
3D Print Halloween toys for a fraction of the cost of treat or treat candy this will be my 8th year saving a tiny but kids love the toys, yes they still get a handful of candy.
3D Print inside windows clips, Christmas light hangers, Holiday decorations, Birthday decorations, Wedding decorations ect. ect.. ect...
So my vote is I have definitely paid for the 3D Printers and Filament.
And still this is a hobby, and will keep it forever.
