New Ender 6 Print bed not moving while printing

Hello, new guy here...

I have a new Ender 6 and when I try and print with it, the z axis is not moving while printing. It does this on the first several layers then eventually starts working later on into the print. This causes the nozzle to dig into the material and basically ruins everything I print. I have printed a couple of small cubes to test, and while I got them done, the first several layers are very nasty. I have tried using Cura and Slic3r and get the same result. Not sure where to start to resolve this issue. I am using the latest firmware from the creality website. Also, Z hopping is turned on and that's not working either. I can however move the z axis with the manual controls on the touch screen and the z axis works fine when running through the leveling steps. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I would like to actually use this thing...
