MIT Researchers make a 3D Printer that Can Locate Object and Print on Top

The folks over at MIT are really hitting it hard when it comes to creating unique 3D printing innovations. Last week we reported on the Ice Cream 3D printer, which could print objects out of ice cream. Now another group of students at MIT has created a 3D printer that is equipped with a super affordable 3D scanner that can locate an object on the print bed, and then precisely print on top of this. The students demonstrated this working to print on top of a random object, as well as resume previously stopped print jobs. They also explained all the other possibilities that this 3D printer could be capable of. Read more about this amazing machine at: http://3dprint.com/9952/mit-research...art-3d-printer

This is exactly what we need to proceed to combine Investment Casting with DMLS as long as we could define the casting location in the powder bed to start the additional DMLS material addition. We would be happy to partner up with some organization to pursue refining the process.
