    General help

Hi All,I'm fascinated by 3D printers and know nothing about them only what i see on you tube and what i read.I want to make a specific thing like small statues and figures, and cant understand when they are printed are they smooth enough to then take casts from ? Some of the figures and statues i have seen look amazing.any info i can get will obviously help me enormously .Many Thanks.

    NO!

3D Printed and they have lines from being extruded.
If you want a polished effect you would need some post 3D Printing work done on them before you could cast.

    or use a resin printer.
For small detailed model, a resin printer is a much better idea.
And the models are good enough to make a mould from.

watch this video and read this thread first !

Detailed figures between 8 and 12" high , would that be a problem ?

as long as you had a large enough printer - no problem :-)

There are not many resin machines that go that tall though.

The larger the item the bigger the price tag :-)

That's not to say that you can't make one in a sections. Perfectly doable.

It also depends on whether or not you are going to paint the figures. In which case sanding the join line and painting would disguise it pretty well.

well a quick look suggests that any resin printer with a z-height over 8 inches is going to cost between £1500-£2000.
approximately the same in dollars - which considering the exchange rate, is really bloody annoying if you live in the uk :-)
there is a nice looking qidi for $799 - but that maxes out at just over 8 inches.

On the plus side resin costs have come right down oin the last 12 months.
Just seen a liter bottle for $42.
That would have been nearer $100 a year or so back.
