Ender 3 X carriage hits home hard

I upgraded the firmware on my Ender 3 from the stock version to the TH3D firmware. Now when the X axis homes the carriage seems to hit the endstop hard and makes a noticeable bang.
(This is unlike homing the Z which gently taps the endstop, bounces up slightly, and then gently goes all the way down.) Is there a way to make the X axis home with a little less force? Does this have anything to do with how tight the belt is?
