As a cover to GE's 2016 annual report, CEO Jeff Immelt has written an intriguing letter. In it he suggests that the age of a global elite may be nearing its close as a result of the industrial internet and advanced manufacturing. He paints a picture of international business going forward in an era when economic nationalism is being adopted by a growing number of countries, including the US. He also calls upon businesses to do more to create the workers and economic circumstances in which they would like to operate rather than simply waiting around and/or taking the cheapest, albeit unsustainable, route.
