Apple certainly has not shown any stunning amount of interest in 3D printing, or R&D efforts that we know of, but their latest foray into 3D technology is sure to excite many iPhone users. Rod Hall at J.P. Morgan projects that the iPhone 8 (or perhaps even the 7 also, with updates) will have 3D laser technology capable of facial recognition. While this is meant as a major improvement on the Touch ID, known for its terribly frustrating failure rate, the 3D sensor could later branch out into offering capabilities for 3D printing, IoT applications, as well as features for both augmented and virtual reality.
