The anticipation of driverless cars is great, particularly because self-driving cars will likely mean many fewer deaths in car accidents. However, that could mean an increase in deaths elsewhere. The majority of organ donations come from victims of car accidents, and if that source diminishes, we could be facing a shortage of badly needed organs for transplants. We need to prepare for an alternative source of transplantable organs, and while some ideas, like an organ market, are a bit scary, 3D printed organs may be the perfect solution.
