America Makes, also known as the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, recently announced Virginia Tech’s DREAMS Lab as the winner of their Innovation Sprint Smart Structures challenge. The winning submission, which was entitled the “Smart Wing Project,” showcased the possibility of integrating mechatronic devices, such as sensors and circuits, into a 3D printed wing in a single process, without post-process assembly. The Virginia Tech-based team successfully implemented a number of smart structures into the 3D printed wing, including embedded actuation, strain sensing, temperature sensing, and two different antennas. Their submission has netted the DREAMS Lab a year of silver-level membership to America Makes. Read more at 3DPrint.com: https://3dprint.com/152005/virginia-...rt-structures/
