Bioprinting, while generally mentioned in connection today with striving toward to creating human organs, is the topic of discussion lately when it comes to bones. Researchers at the AMBER Materials Science Centre in Dublin have found a way to use hydrogel bio-inks, in combination with stem cells, to cause regeneration of functional bone with its own blood vessels within the human body. It’s hoped that with their new method, soon medical professionals will be able to bypass bone grafts and simply begin using this customized, patient-specific type of care to allow patients to heal more quickly and with less pain. The research team sees this method as applying to wide range of applications such as that of regenerating bone in the areas of the head, jaw, spine, and more—along with improving both knee and hip replacements.
