Last year, Dutch artist Peter Smith started an initiative to 3D print a 12-meter Plastic Madonna statue and display it on the beach in Rio de Janeiro during the Olympic Games. Thanks to Brazilian artist Eric Fuly, Smith’s idea has come to fruition; the statue appeared on the Botafogo beach in Rio de Janeiro during the recent World Oceans Day. At the same time, Smith unveiled a smaller 3D printed version of the Plastic Madonna at the Fab City campus in Amsterdam. The statue is made up of recycled PET bottles, and depicts a mother breastfeeding her child, and symbolizes the unintentional poisoning of her baby with plastic molecules.
