In December, the multinational QB50 project will launch 50 CubeSat satellites into the thermosphere to gather data about this little-known region above the Earth. It will be the largest, most thorough study of the region ever undertaken, and researchers hope to gain information about how thermospheric radiation and other elements can effect electronics on Earth. Each satellite will also have its own individual purposes, such as a 3D printed satellite from the University of New South Wales that will test, among other readings, how well 3D printed thermoplastic holds up in a harsh space environment.
