Best program to print out letters and words?

What would you suggest if I need to print out words. I am making signs, but only want the words printed (no background to the sign). I would like to use some of the fonts that I have on my computer to do it. What software would allow me to do this, and how can I go about doing it?

Sketchup Make (free) let's you create 3D text from any of the fonts installed on your computer.

Install Sketchup, start it. It will ask for a template. Scroll down and choose the last in the list (the Maker template). Click on Tools, then 3D text. The rest should be obvious (it'll even give you a live tutorial).
