Based out of Stony Brook, New York, the medical company Vascular Simulations is utilizing Stratasys FDM 3D printing technology to help train surgeons to better treat cardiovascular disease. Using a Stratasys Dimension Elite 3D Printer, the medical team creates a 3D printed model of patient-specific blood vessels, which are then coated in silicone as the ABS material is dissolved away. This leaves them with an accurately replicated vessel, which is integrated into the Vascular Simulations Replicator, a device that creates realistic conditions for surgeons to train for intensive procedures in a hands-on way.
