A team of researchers from the University of California, San Diego have made a connection that might not have been immediately apparent. When thinking of better ways to collect samples from the surface of Mars, they turned to the humble sea urchin as a model. The unique configuration of the sea urchin's mandibles allows it to bore straight through rock and has provided the inspiration for a much more efficient -- and 3D printed -- sample collecting device that they team hopes will interest NASA.
