Designer Josh Stephenson was diagnosed with a rare type of eye cancer that had spread throughout his face. Doctors were forced to remove the cancer so he lost his left eye, his upper jaw and the roof of his mouth. A team of surgeons and dentist Andrew Dawood used part of Stephenson’s shoulder blade and a variety of 3D printing technologies to completely rebuild his jaw. The 3D printers that were used in the process ended up inspiring Stephenson to create his own line of bespoke umbrella handles using the 3D printing technology that helped give him his jaw back.
