The Daft Punk helmet has been getting a lot of its own time in the spotlight lately, and of all things, in the 3D printing arena--and particularly that of Guy-Manuel’s. Just recently we saw the Adafruit team embellishing the helmet with more bells and whistles, and now, a research team at SAIT Polytechnic decided to take on 3D printing the helmet, but with a different aim. Using the helmet as a reverse engineering project, their goal was simply in learning and expanding the skillset of the team in 3D printing, rapid prototyping and surface modeling. They did indeed find many challenges, over a two month period, in making their own 3D printed prototype, from materials issues to that of re-creating the visor.
