What do paleontologists at Queensland's Museum of Natural History and 3D gaming environments have to do with each other? A lot more than you would think. Curator Scott Hocknull sets out to demonstrate just this in a TEDx talk in which he reveals an Xbox platform for controlling dinosaur models. It's not just a gimmicky show either, Hocknull wanted to try and share a larger part of the enormous amount of knowledge and material that exists about these creatures but often has to remain behind closed doors. Using 3D modeling and 3D printing, he demonstrates, with an enthusiasm that is hard to resist, the ways in which 3D printing can not only bring pieces from the museum's backroom collection out for public consumption but also be used as a tool for teaching the paleontologists a thing or two about their beloved dinosaurs.
