California 3D Printing service provider Forecast 3D helped the winner of NASA’s 3D Printed Mars Habitat Challenge by 3D printing a highly detailed replica of their concept Mars Ice House. The Ice House habitat was designed to be made entirely of ice so the creators wanted the replica to look like it was made of actual frozen water. Forecast 3D printed the Ice House model with their in house SLA printer using a clear materials called 11122 XC Watershed. They then coated it using a custom hybrid finishing process that gave the material a frosted surface with a slight blueish tint, replicating the translucency of ice almost perfectly.
