In a paper released today, a team of researchers has detailed the results of their latest experiment designed to further understanding of the role that various components of DNA play in its successful replication. Working together from Imperial College of London, the Van Andel Research Institute, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and Stony Brook University, the authors described a new understanding of the role that the protein Cdc6 plays in the DNA replication process. When working with entities as diminutive as the components of DNA, having larger scale models that can be seen and handled can be very helpful to study. As such, the group has used 3D printing to turn image data gathered from electron microscopes into large scale models that have assisted them in furthering their research.
