Professor 3D Prints an Ancient Sundial

New technology allows us to take relics that may have been excavated hundreds of years ago and understand more about them today. Thanks to 3D printing, Wesleyan University professor Christopher Parslow was able to examine the functionality of a portable sundial that was found in the 1730s by excavators uncovering the ancient city of Herculaneum that had been covered in volcanic ash after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Parslow discovered that while the sundial—shaped like an Italian ham—only gives basic time—it did take some ‘finesse’ to create.
