Funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to the tune of $1.1 million, the University of Southhampton is working on ways to 3D print fiber optic preforms for the creation of intricate new internal structures within the optics. The method could have staggering implications within both the telecom and datacom industries as these new optics are able to confine light to certain areas. Additional details on this research, led by Professor Jayanta Sahu can be found here: http://3dprint.com/78304/3d-print-fiber-optics/
