Radek BarvĂ*ř, a student in the Czech Republic, learned how to use 3D printing technology as part of his Bachelor's thesis, creating 3D printed terrain and surface models. Once he had finished that major project, he rose to his next challenge--his father asked him to make something useful, like a ship. Radek has since created several models of ships and boats. He has designed them from scratch, including five iterations of his first model, to create three different boats, now available on Thingiverse. Using SketchUp 8 with some extensions, he designs and redesigns the models--currently including a research ship, a ferry, and a cargo ship.
