REbutton - 3D Printed Buttons & Cuff Links Like Nothing You've Ever Seen

Houston, Texas-based reBUTTON has just launched a Kickstarter campaign, seeking to raise $50K by July 17, to fund their new definition of luxury clothing accessories. Founder Anthony Obodoechina explained that the inspiration arose from the retail price for high-end cuff links--a whopping $400--and the realization that they could make high-quality cuff links at a significantly more affordable price point. By bringing 3D printing into the picture, the 14K gold plated cuff links Obodoechina and his team came up with cut the cost by 90%. The full concept, reBUTTON, takes a 3D printed plastic button, stitches it onto a shirt, and allows for 3D printed metal or other material designs to screw on. Below is a look at the reBUTTON idea:

I don't know how feasible this really is. First off, gold-plated cufflinks don't really cost $400; here's some for $30, and they'll customize them for you too: http://www.4allgifts.com/product/eng...1vsaAuXw8P8HAQ There seems to be some confusion here between the cost of production and the retail price.

And if you've got shirts with French cuffs, the whole idea with them is that there's no button to impede ironing them flat. It would seem that sewing those threaded buttons on would negate that. I'm picturing a guy getting dressed, and trying to screw those little metal pieces onto those threaded button thingies without twisting them off - it just seems like more hassle than it's worth...
