Chappie, a movie that opened fairly quietly last month, hasn't made many headlines, despite several big-name stars (Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver) appearing, the participation of Weta Workshop and Imagine Entertainment in the props department, and the use of high-tech methods to create the movie's robot stars. The movie's namesake robot, Chappie, is reprogrammed from the South African police force to be a free-thinking robot by software whiz Deon (Dev Patel), and its expressive AI is under attack. In order to create the most detailed robots and fight scenes possible, Weta Workshop and Imagine Entertainment used 3D printing to build 19 complete robots. For Chappie, 17 different versions were needed, while a robot named Moose towers at over 12 feet tall and needed a whopping 10,000 unique parts. 3D modeling and printing allowed for the creation of elaborate and consistent design throughout the near-future robots.
