The John Lewis company's Sofa Studio was built to let customers design a personalized sofa for their homes, and it combines 3D printed model sofas and color swatches which both contain RFID tags. As the model sofa and the swatch are placed on a tabletop reader, the information encoded within the pieces combines to produce an image on a display which represents the customer's choices. John Vary, the man behind the idea, says Sofa Studio was built in 12 weeks using 3D printing and laser cutting, and that in just another 12 weeks, the device and the system were used in some 65,000 customer interactions.
