Ive been reading up on RAMPS board that seems like something I will also need a specialist shop to manufacture. With surface mounted components and double sided tracts

But the more I read up on the RepRaps the more I'm impressed by their ability to completely self replicate...

I think I will. I have some of the 3d parts printed. I also printed the acrylic piece out on paper using the plotter to see how big it will be. Pretty impressive.

So what is the deal with the RAMPS board?

You see the Ardiuno I can buy locally in SA. But the ramps board/shield that fits on top of the Ardiuno to control the stepper motors, that needs to be etched and build. But the v1.4 is not so simple that you can just build it using simple home methods.
