As 3D printing begins to become more commonplace and affordable, it’s catching the attention of almost all governments worldwide. The United Kingdom International Property Office (UKIPO) decided to launch a two-part study to assess the legal ramifications of using 3D files, and modifying and disseminating them, as well as the use of online platforms. They also examined the effects of 3D printing on industry. While the results and conclusion of their study was generally that 3D printing offers no real immediate threat in any way regarding copyrights or threat to industry, they do recommend guidance for individuals and businesses in terms of licensing. They also make it clear that they will be keeping an eye on 3D printing practices as the technology and tools progress.
