Scientist Tresa Pollock, the chair of the Materials Department at the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB), doesn't work in the extreme conditions of outer space herself, but rather works to discover new materials that can do so. Pollock will soon be getting some extra help with her research in the form of a $3 million fellowship from the US Department of Defense. She received one of just 13 prestigious 2017 Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellowships from the DoD, which will fund five years of her research in developing a 3D printing platform for new, extreme-use materials.
