MOLDLAY Filament Announced by Kai Parthy

Kai Parthy has just announced his latest 3D printer filament creation, MOLDLAY. This new material is wax-like and enables its users to 3D print an item that they would like to cast. The full details on how to use the filament to make your own mold for casting tin or brass can be found here: http://3dprint.com/40579/moldlay-kai-parthy/ Below are some of the material's features/specs:

    • Near zero warping
    • Can be printed without a heated bed
    • Prints at temperatures of 170 – 180° C
    • Molds must be treated at 270°C in an oven

Let us know if you have used MOLDLAY and what your thoughts were. Below is a picture of the filament filled with concrete (Left), and the finished tin object (RIGHT).

man, kai's stuff just keeps on getting better!

I wonder what temp you print this at. Considering that it's like wax, it must be pretty low. Now what I'd really like to see is an open-source wax jetting printer like a solidscape.

    Pretty cool stuff, actually.
Leave your supports on the piece, and they become venting for the mold. Don't know if I would use concrete though. Casting plaster and sand ought to work just fine and not take nearly as long to set as concrete does.
