Up to now it has never been an issue on anything. I can imagine for low powered PCs/Laptops it could be due to hanging or crashing (given its "streaming" nature)

Sounds like Buildtak - they are usually black though. It is exactly like an old cheap mouse pad with the plastic textured top.
The 3M brand could just be for the adhesive base bit.
Hi fotomatcion - no I didn't try to print it as it shows nothing for me in the preview window after slicing it and contains nothing in the resulting output Gcode - it wouldn't even print in that case.
Doesn't slice properly for me in Simplify3d either, though the model shows up, when you prepare to print (slice it) it shows nothing at all and 0 build time. The resulting Gcode file is empty bar...

That sounds like the fan under the printer cooling the board - sounds like it is rubbing the cables or similar to me - I would get that looked at as soon as, you don't want a shredded power cable...
