For insulation you could use cork, I got mine at Ikea... look for the ABSKILD Place Mat. It's got good insulation properties, it's fire retardant (better safe than sorry) and looks classy :p

Which version of Slic3r? There's a bug in version 1.2.9 that can cause over extrusion, try 1.1.7 to see if that gives better results.
