Father Teaches Kids to Swim Thanks to 3D Printed Prosthetic

When Dan Lasko lost his leg to an IED explosion in Afghanistan, he probably wasn't considering the impact that would have on him when he wanted to give his as-yet-unborn sons swim lessons in the future. When that moment arrived, however, he quickly realized that there needed to be some better way to engage in water activities with his kids than hopping to the poolside with a toddler in his arms. Thanks to Northwell Health, Eschen Prosthetic & Orthotic Laboratories, and Composites Prototyping Center, a 3D printed amphibious leg has been created, called "The Fin," that allows Lasko to walk up and dive right in. Currently still under development for general use, it is expected that the limb will be commercially available within the next six months.
