3D Printed Models of Baby's Brain Assist in Successful Surgery

Bentley Yoder wasn't expected to survive more than a few hours after his birth. During a routine ultrasound, doctors discovered that he was suffering from encephalocele, a rare condition in which a large portion of his brain was growing outside of his skull. Even if he did survive, the doctors said, he would essentially be a "shell" with no cognitive function. But Bentley proved everyone wrong, living and functioning like a normal baby, and on May 24 surgeons used 3D printed models to plan a delicate surgery to place his brain back into his skull.
