Robert Hofmann 3D Prints Fully Functional Cylinder Block

The Germany-based automotive company Robert Hofmann GmbH recently utilized 3D printing technology to create a fully functional cylinder block to test within a Volkswagen motor. The 25 kilogram cylinder block was printed in about 300 hours on the Concept Laser X 1000 R, and is the largest single component ever produced by the Robert Hofmann team. Upon testing the 3D printed component, the Volkswagen engineers found that the 3D printed component had lower porosity and smaller distortions and deviations compared to the traditionally casted iron version.
