American University Researchers 3D Printing with Active Chemistry

Researchers from American University, in a project headed by Matthew Hartings, are using chemistry and 3D printing to study better ways to remove pollutants from air, water, and the environment. In a somewhat complex concept that actually is acted upon in a fairly simple exercise, the researchers took a small, simple matrix and soaked it in chemically active titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles. Then they added the nanoparticles to ABS 3D printing filament and waited to see if the nanoparticles would stay active as well as examining the matrix to see if it would continue to perform. The answers were yes in both cases, leaving them to conclude that in this process there may be great potential for photocatalytic removal of environmental pollutants.
