South Africa Pioneering in 3D Printing

Recently, there have been a number of developments and investments that have made South Africa one of the potential pioneers in the 3D printing industry. For instance, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) has committed R30.7 million towards additive manufacturing research and programs, which are primarily focused on titanium medical implants, aerospace components, polymer 3D printing, and design. Even in the private sector, additive manufacturing has become a critical tool for prototyping and production, which has led to a number of newfound local 3D printing service bureaus. One example of this expansive 3D printing market involves the Pinetown-based high-end audio company Coherent Audio, which recently turned to a local private 3D printing bureau to help them prototype and produce low volume parts for personalized speaker systems.
