Newborn Baby With Skull Disorder Saved With 3D Printing

Recently, a child was born in Brazil with a disorder that affects one out of every 2,000 babies. Cloverleaf Skull Syndrome (Kleeblattschädel syndrome) has traditionally been considered inoperable -- but 3D printing is changing that. The Center for Information Technology Renato Archer (CTI) in Braizl has been using 3D printing in the medical field and now, Dr. Jorge Vicente Lopes da Silva has utilized the technology to make possible a surgery for this newborn. The team at CTI created a 3D reconstruction of the child's skull using InVesalius software, then 3D printed a replica to enhance their understanding of the operation at hand. The surgery was considered successful, and the child is showing improved development.
