Tom Dumoulin Research Team Uses 3D Printed Mannequin to Make Cycling Skinsuit

Tom Dumoulin recently saw 3D scanning and 3D printing help with success as he rode in the Tour de France time Trials on July 15th. Both the researchers at TU Delft Sports Engineering Institute and the members of Team Giant-Alpecin, enthused about using science to get a leg up in the race, worked on testing Dumoulin’s skinsuit for aerodynamics. First they 3D scanned his body, then 3D printed a mannequin. That’s not all, however, as they then tested this mannequin in a wind tunnel at the university and performed some pretty complex calculations to choose the proper attire for Dumoulin.
