3D Printed Door Handle has No Moving Parts

Researchers from the Hasso-Plattner Institute have been busy creating examples via 3D printing that show the versatility and flexibility that can be achieved through the use of metamaterials. Their main example, in a 3D printed door latch, shows how the materials are able to receive force and adapt to the movement of the door being opened and closed. This is all outlined in their paper, ‘Metamaterial Mechanisms,’ which also goes into detail regarding the 3D editor they’ve created so that users will easily be able to replicate or build on some of these designs.
