Advice for engineer and builder on machine

Hello,
I have decided to try 3D printing. I want to start small, perhaps in the $300 range.
I want a machine that is strong on mechanical features, perhaps a little weak on electronics.

I have already ordered the SKR 1.3 controller and a set of TMC2208 boards for it. I have designed
microcontroller-based boards for years, but, not, necessarily stepper controllers. I have a lot to learn
there.

I also have a pretty good shop with sheet metal shear and brake, drill press, and such. So I am capable
of making mods and enhancements.

I am NOT an artist, but have done simple CAD work for many years. Been doing some Arduino projects
using the Teensy 3.2.

Perhaps with that background, you guys can make recommendations.
