University Students Develop Life Sciences Equipment with 3D Printed Modular Parts

A team of researchers and students at the University of California, Riverside have developed a system of modular components for life sciences testing and research equipment. It borrows from the concept of standard electronic part design and building block systems like LEGO. The flexible and adaptable 3D printable parts are called Multifluidic Evolutionary Components (MECs) and were created to perform a fundamental function that would be needed for the construction of real-world testing and research devices.Tasks as simple as measuring data, micro-pumps, fluid storage and measuring, LED user interfaces, mixing components, sensing modules and parts that stimulate skeletal structures are all considered relatively standard.
