Northwestern University 3D Prints Patient-Specific Vascular Stents

A research team from Northwestern University has utilized 3D printing technology to fabricate patient-specific vascular stents that are flexible and biodegradable. Led by engineering professors Guillermo Ameer and Cheng Sun, the group utilized projection micro-stereolithography 3D printing and a specially formulated polymer to produce these stents. The 3D printing process enabled this Northwestern research team to print features as small as 7 microns, which is especially important for the production of vascular stents, which have fine mesh dimensions and can sometimes be smaller than 3 millimeters in diameter. The microCLIP technology also allows them to fabricate up to 100 stents at a time, making their process faster and more affordable than traditional methods.
