If you try to compare 3D printing prices to shapewave for example this store is about 3-5 times cheaper if part is average size or bigger.
yeah but these guys are using standard fff printers. The current big boys are mostly using powder deposition based machines now - so it's not exactly a direct comparison quality wise.
You are right that service is not same because Playfulpixels use only FFF, but FFF works in many purposes and it is sad that you can't get that from Shapeways. Quite often FFF is good enough to many purposes, but it is quite hard to get anywhere cheaply. Anyway Playfulpixels is concentrated on 3D design and printing is just secondary service for them.
For example I created RC helicopter that would get 2300€ price tag in Shapeways - it was totally impossible to print it. With FFF print it was about 230€
carbon fiber cutting would be very useful for strengthening certain 3d printed parts. they should offer them as a tandem service.
