Are 3D Printed Organ Patents in Danger?

Patent law experts are struggling to understand what impacts a 2011 change in the statutes that states that "no patent may issue on a claim directed to or encompassing a human organism." This may have been easily understood as a prevention against the patenting of genetically modified babies, for example, but may get significantly more complicated as we approach the possibility of 3D printing human organs. The uncertainty over the definition of the term human organism is one that can only be resolved in the courts and could slow down the implementation of such technology should it ever be perfected.
