3D Printed Echolocation Whistles are on their way

Researchers from both Texas A&M and University of Massachusetts Amherst have received federal funding to the tune of $312,500 for helping to ward off bats from death upon flying into wind turbines. They’ve developed a 3D printed echolocation device that functions as a whistle to be attached onto the turbines. As the turbine blades spin faster and faster, the 3D printed whistles pulse louder and faster, hopefully scaring the bats away. The whistles go into production soon and will be tested in the lab, with the final phase being completed by summer of 2016.
