LLNL Researchers Making 3D Printed Foam

Foams, or cellular solids, are hidden everywhere around us - in our walls, our cars, our electronics. They're a major component in insulation, shock absorbers, and flotation devices. Now material scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory may have found a way to make them even better through additive manufacturing. A series of tests found that 3D printed foams hold up for longer than traditionally manufactured foams when subjected to long-term stress, and while the research isn't finished yet, the researchers have stated that there's no reason not to start using 3D printed foam in certain applications.
