Ten signs you own a 3d printer

1) Whenever anyone mentions something to you - your reply is: 'I can make that !'

2) your house/workshop is over run with little plastic models, doodads and fiddle widgets.

3) Your friends see you coming and run before you give them another useless piece of plastic

4) Your christmas gift list consists entirely of weird filament types.

5) You only intend giving gifts this year that you've actually 'made' yourself (for 'made' read mostly downloaded from thingiverse)

6) Even your anorack has 3d printed plastic toggles.

7) You spend your life hoping household items will break, so you can make your own.

8) You sincerely believe that you will invent and print something that will make your fortune.

9) You believe that self-replicating printers (rep-rap) is a real concept because you can make a few plastic parts. While ignoring the fact that you have to buy all the metal, motors, electronics and actual printheads.

10) One day you hope to be able to print your own replacement body parts and become a truly self made man.

I will hold me hand up to all of those except number 9 :-)
And while I am one - I don't actually own an anorack :-)

That said there are more and more conductive filaments around and 3d printed motors are rapdily becoming a reality.
Add to that carbon fibre filaments and thoeretically in a few years you could conceivably print every part of a 3d printer, except maybe the hotend.

That's the best joke pulled on the Poms evvaaa! It is produced in England in order to fool Poms that it is the milk from the land of milk and honey. I reckon that it is brewed using the seepage from a Cantonese kitchen sink. It tastes bloody aweful. Even warm English beer is preferable. You can only buy it in Australia as an "Imported" beer, like Budweiser and such.

Fosters Lager was made infamous by the great Australian satirist, Barry Humphries (aka Dame Edna Everage) in the 1960's comic strip The Adventures of Barry Mackenzie which was published in "Private Eye" in London. Barry Mackenzie was a charicature - a naive Melbournian who joined the Cultural Cringe migration of young Australians to England in the late 1950-early 60s, made possible by the wings of the Boeing 707. Being young and uninhibited, these young Aussies indulged in boozy parties and clumsy seduction of English roses.

The wheel has turned half-circle. Now Australia is flooded with young English people (and their European collegues) who backpack around the country and behave as our young people did 50 years ago. Perhaps these young people are the grandchildren of those Australian emigres, seeking their ancestral roots under the Southern Cross. They sure do a lot of rooting when they are here. For curiosity sake, what temperature do you drink your beer at? (the beer's temperature... not your fuzzy grey skies... :) )

You can't get it down fast enough if it is much colder than 10 degrees.

It wasn't an actual question - just a response to the blatant racial stereotyping of an englishman at the seaside :-)
For the record I do wear sandals, all year round without socks - yes even in the snow.

Why ? - good question, one way to avoid cold feet in the winter is to freeze the buggers so you can't actually feel anything at all ! ;-)

What I'm surprised at is that nobody's added anything to the actual list.

If my girl (or job) would let me get away with it, my entire shoe selection would be either sandals and bath slippers. But no, I've gotta wear shoes like a 'normal person'. (Though these Sketchers are about as close to bath slippers one can get while looking respectable. A shame they wear out so fast.)

As for beer and beer-like substances, I've found I like Stouts and Lambics, with very few things in between. So if I go out, I'm pretty much stuck with Guinness (because Belgian beers here are priced like friggin champagne.)

Don't drink grape based wine (see above comment on real ale) , prefer my vodka neat and direct from the freezer and make my own sloe gin, creme de menthe and toffee vodka.

I'm pretty guilty of 1, 5, 8, 9, and 10... And I don't even own my own printer yet. (alas, crowd funding, such a harsh way to live, can't stand the waiting, and can't justify blowing the money on a printer now when I'll have one in four months that I already payed for.)

I like a small (330ml) can of cold lager to wash the dust down and whet the whistle.

Then a big cup of PG Tips to rehydrate.

A cold glass glass of Cabernet/Merlot with dinner, and a Nestle hot chocolate or big glass of cold milk as a bedtime drink.

Instant coffee is OK in the workshop - filter coffee served by my Beloved (when she's after something) is always welcome. A thousand curses on Macdonalds for no longer serving filter coffee all day. Espresso machines should be blown up and a cappuccino is a dwarf Capuchin monk.

#9 used to be a very contentious issue in the 3D printer hobby. A machine with an all-metal frame was heresy, because it pushed it further away from being a "self building machine" . Rep rap is an ideal to reach, not a very good reality yet. Plastic frame joints don't make for a very rigid frame, slender rods didn't help either.

My mate's actually got a ct scan dvd from when they checked his spine. Arthritis in one of his verterbrae - nasty.

No idea how we go from that to say: printing his spleen. But I'll have to borrow the dvd and have an play :-)

Amused reading the comments above, as was born in WA and live in the UK, have two passports. Can choose which side to agree with and which side to take a pop at ;)
The Aussies may make some good beer, but not found it yet on account of it being served so cold it's impossible to taste - and you need to wear gloves so you can hold the deep-frozen glasses it is often served up in!

Well I don't own my printer yet, but when I do I am sure I will be in the group conforming to most those items! LOL

Setting alarms to get up through the night to start new prints? Maybe not as I'd likely have long prints running all night.
Now, getting up 2 or 3 times a night to write down a great Idea I just had for printing something later, OK I do that now and I don't even have a printer yet! LOL

I make my own beer so why not my own mugs to drink it in, and maybe the bottles and caps to transport it. Can I print such things? Food safe?
I have many times wanted to take a bit of beer to my friends at some events, just too much problems trying haul 2-3 cases of glass beer bottles on a motorcycle! Too expensive to buy plastic bottles to toss when empty. Already I am thinking designs for custom bottles friends can keep for event souvenirs.

Might also be a 3D print Junkie if every-time you look at your vehicle you think of something neat you can print for it!
In my case my motorcycles mostly. Although I already thought of a few things my 4X4 truck needs also.

PET is food-safe, but generally only for one-time use, as it's nearly impossible to sterilize a 3D printed object no matter what it's made of.

Alcohol I suppose is another matter, as it is itself a sterilizing agent, it doesn't matter so much if it gets into the layers.

Technically, PLA is food-safe, though there is a good bit of controversy around that. If you do accidentally actually eat it, it will digest (In other words, it's biodegradable). Though it's non-toxic, some folks disagree on it being harmless (one of the breakdown byproducts is possibly an estrogen analogue).

Feign, and while this will sound far fetched, it's actually common practice, Gamma Irradiation would work nicely for sterilization of printed materials. Now, doing that on a home scale is a completely different question.

Another option may be high dose UV exposure. I have sterilized ambulances before by leaving a special UV lamp on inside the truck for 24 hours. This might be a practical solution for home sterilization.

Well, I broke the mold.

feign, mate, this food use has been covered, recovered, stripped back to bare plastic and recovered in a different colour so many times it's getting really silly. And in the end it boils down to personal choice.

Very true, and I personally would happily drink out of a 3D printed mug or eat with 3D printed utensils, but when someone asks about it specifically, I try to cover all the bases.
Maybe I should have said it's a personal choice, but a restaurant (at least in America) would get in trouble for using it as such.

Half the eating places now serve food on wooden planks anyway, one has to wonder what's wrong with normal plates, they were invented for a good reason, easy to clean and hygienic, humans stopped eating off pieces of tree bark long ago until it became fashionable for whatever reason.
