Lets say I have an image like this:

And I want to generate a 3d model of a medallion from it, like these:

is there an automatic/semiautomatic way to generate it, or do I need to model it all by hand?

If you get what you want as a .DXF file, you can put those images on what ever 3D-Printed object you want.
you will always be better off modeling by hand. there is something in some cad software and simplify3d called a heightfield. this will take a photo and turn it into a flat 3d extrusion. i have used this to make lithophanes. im not sure though how it will work with that logo because its flat clipart with no shading or depth to it. you would really just have to try it and see. i doubt it will give you the look your going for though.
Well.... How about we give him 3 or 4 days... I'm thinking if he used his logo as posted at the start of this thread as the sample instead of that Railway logo in the tutorial.... He is going to have exactly what he is looking for.

My wife was looking to replicate a historic Greek coin from an image found in Google images
A quick and impressive tool was found in the open source slicing software called "Cura"
This software has a tool that makes a lithopane from a photo. 4 file types can be imported. .bmp, .jpg, .jpeg, .png
Quality of the photo makes a difference, some worked fine and others took some touch up. Photo editing software that shows the histogram is the secret sauce.
Cura has a few adjustments that can change the extrusion ... height, direction, slicing accuracy etc.
It's helpful to be able to test the settings by printing a few models.

Blender import ? ... what is the path to importing a .png, or .jpg

Sorry ... in Blender, I'm not seeing a photo or image import ... no reference in the manual for an image import or selection button anywhere in the user interface
There is an import option for a .svg file extension ... is that what you mean ?

or you can use a vector tracing program like inkscape, I just find it cleaner to work with simple planes, inscape generates a curve from a text path, which is a very messy mesh and makes for a cruddy extrusion (without tonnes of holes)

So far I have only used Blender for boolean operations on .stl models and haven't explored all the other features and add ons

This will allow you do cut through your object like a knife which will create a vertice line you can cut manually and then deal with the edge loops yourself and not hope netfab will do a magic job (which it doesn't.. alot!)
Make your cut and press space bar to apply it, your dots will go red indicating you made the cut.
If you want a free cut, just press K and Z and omit C so you don't have the angle constraint.
Feel free to message me, I'd prefer to let this thread die as the OP hasn't logged on since he posted it 8 days ago, obviously wasn't very important to him but I don't mind helping you out with Blender, has a small learning curve but the best for modelling freely without the mess of autodesk and other cad programs. Does metrics very very well so you can model to precise scale.
